Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

ABOUT THE LITTER

Besides wood, what is this litter made of?
Catit Go Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter is made from various types of conifer wood (pine, spruce, fir, etc.), plant fibres (such as corn – not meant for consumption), and natural clumping agents.

What are granules?
After pelletisation, Catit Go Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter is crushed into smaller pieces called granules. These granules of different sizes and shapes put together, have a much larger surface area than pellets. Thanks to this feature, Catit Go Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter covers cat droppings more efficiently and absorbs up to 3 times its weight in liquid – that’s a whopping 300%! Thanks to its impressive absorptive power, less litter is needed for incredible results, which benefits nature (and your piggy bank).

Is this litter suitable for people or cats with allergies?
Yes, in most cases, though we always recommend checking with your veterinarian if your cat has specific health issues. We don’t use any chemicals in our litter and greatly reduce the amount of dust with a double sifting process, so there are fewer allergens and a lower risk of allergic reactions. In addition, the litter granules make for a very airy bedding, allowing small granules to sink down to the bottom of the litter box. This means your cat won’t kick them up while digging around in the litter box, eliminating airborne dust.

How does the litter’s odour control work?
Our litter has natural odour controlling properties, which help keep your litter box smelling fresh. The patented natural compounds and fine fibre structure instantly absorb odours, stopping them from forming.

Why are mineral-based litters so bad for the environment?
The resources for clay litter, for example, are collected by an ecologically destructive process called strip mining, which leaves vast stretches of barren land behind and causes wildlife to lose their habitat. Clay does not decompose, which means that in the USA alone, each year 2.5 billion kilograms of clay ends up in landfills and stays there, indefinitely. Moreover, the amount of CO2 emitted during mining, production, and transportation of clay litter, way supersedes that of our wood litter. Lend nature a helping hand, and Go Natural!

How much does this litter weigh?
The litter is pleasantly lightweight: a single liter of litter weighs approximately 500 grams.

Where does the wood in this litter originate from?
The wood in our litter is leftover lumber from sustainably managed forests. In this way, the biological diversity in the forests is protected and maintained. Our wood originates from the fir forests found in the eastern part of Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia region), and in the confined areas of Austria and Slovenia.

USAGE OF THE LITTER

How do I transition from my old litter to Catit wood litter?

  • Fill a litter box with Catit Go Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter

Place it next to your cat’s current litter box, still filled with the litter your cat is currently used to. We’ll refer to this as the ’old’ litter.

  • Prepare to transition the litter box

If your cat started to use the wood litter regularly, that’s great! Proceed as described below. Even if your cat did not use the wood litter, transition the wood litter box as described below.

  • Start to transition your litter box

Add a few scoops of used litter from your cat’s old litter box to the box filled with wood litter. Next, top up your cat’s old litter box with wood litter.

  • Repeat this process every day

It is important that you take things slowly. Also, don’t forget to clean the litter box that you are transitioning regularly.

  • Transition to 100% wood litter

Once you see that the litter box that your cat is using most is mainly wood, you can try to transition to 100% Catit Go Natural Wood litter!

How much litter should I use?
Pour a layer (5-7cm) of Catit Go Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter in the litter box and keep it at this level at all times to ensure the best results. Make sure that you use our wood litter in a dry environment only – no damp bathrooms.

How often should I scoop the litter?
We recommend scooping once every day to prevent bad odours.

What is the best scoop for natural litters?
A wide scoop with large holes makes scooping lightweight litter easier.

How long will one bag of litter last for?
On average, a 15L bag of Catit Go Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter will last 2.5 to 3.5 months in a single cat household. But of course this depends on the size of your litter box, the number and size of the cats using it, and even how much they’re drinking.

Can I use this litter in my cat’s current litter box?
Most likely, yes! But if you’re looking for something new, we have an excellent selection of litter boxes, ranging from regular to jumbo, all compatible with Catit Go Natural Wood Clumping Cat Litter.

RECYCLING THE LITTER

Can I flush this litter down the toilet?
We recommend disposing of cat droppings in the rubbish rather than flushing them, though our litter is perfectly flushable thanks to its natural composition. Should you decide to flush the litter, make sure to read the topic below.

How do I flush litter down the toilet?

  • Check local regulations to make sure that you are allowed to flush litter.
  • Remove feces and large clumps from the litter box with a scoop and dispose of them in the bin or compost them. This is important to prevent waterways from being polluted.
  • Clumps the size of a walnut or smaller can be flushed down the toilet.
  • Wait for a few seconds until the clumps start to disintegrate in the water before flushing them.
  • Only flush small amounts of litter, one clump at a time. Larger amounts should be thrown in the waste bin or composted.

How do I compost this litter?
Before you get started:

  • Add a layer of sawdust, soil, or leaves at the bottom of your compost bin.
  • Add a layer of used cat litter.
  • Cover the cat litter with a 2.5cm layer of sawdust, soil, or leaves.
  • Repeat this process and feel free to add other compostable materials such as fruit or vegetable waste.
  • Make sure to aerate your compost regularly.
  • After about 6 months to a year, your compost is ready for use on non-edible plants.

IMPORTANT: we don’t recommend using composted litter as fertiliser for edible crops, as there is a risk of E.coli, tapeworm and toxoplasmosis contaminating your crops.

Why is composting better than throwing the litter in the waste bin?
In order to biodegrade, the wood needs oxygen and water. Wood litter that is thrown away in your bin ends up in landfills, which are very tightly packed, contain barely any soil and very little oxygen. Due to these conditions, the wood litter will only biodegrade extremely slowly. When composted, the litter breaks down naturally into the soil, starting the Natural Cycle anew!
